Wisconsin’s first land trust, founded 1937
To protect the Sanctuary and inspire stewardship of natural areas through programs of education, outreach and research
1,830 members across all 50 states and Canada
Over 8,000 and growing!
Over 200 volunteers support all facets of our operation.
Miles of winding trails for hiking and snowshoeing through the most biologically diverse ecosystem in Wisconsin. Extraordinary forests and wetlands are home to over 475 plant species, including 25 of the 40 species of orchids native to the state, as well as the largest population of the federally endangered Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly and 60 species of migrating and nesting birds. The historic Baileys Harbor Range Lights, a rare type of lighthouse, are also found on our campus.
Our Nature Center is open to visitors year-round.
Believe us, we love dogs! But our first priority as a natural area is to create a refuge for nature where the impacts of human activity don’t interfere with the survival of native plants and animals. It’s up to us to ensure that we use the best management practices to conserve these unique areas for biodiversity. Unfortunately, dogs and conservation areas are not a good mix for a variety of reasons. Even when leashed, dogs can disturb wildlife, inadvertently spread invasive plants into natural areas and compromise fragile research areas along the trails.
There are many parks and trails in Door County where dogs are welcome, including Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek, Whitefish Dunes State Park in Jacksonport, Cave Point County Park in Jacksonport and Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay. For your convenience, there is also a dog park here in Baileys Harbor located at 2392 Cty F.
