Happy World Soil Day!

Got soil?  Then it’s time to celebrate one of the world’s most neglected resources.

Like water, soil is a finite natural resource. On a human time-scale, it is non-renewable. However, despite the essential role that soil plays for human livelihoods worldwide, there is increasing degradation of soil resources.

Recognizing the global soil challenge, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched the Global Soil Partnership in 2011. The Partnership brings together international, regional and national organizations that are working in the area of soil protection and sustainable management. Its goals are to implement the provisions of the 1982 World Soil Charter and to raise awareness on the importance of soil resources as a critical component of the natural system and a vital contributor to our well-being.

This renewed recognition of the central role of soil resources has triggered numerous regional and international projects, initiatives and actions. But despite these activities, soil remains under pressure.

The 38th meeting of the FAO Conference adopted resolutions to observe December 5, 2013 as World Soil Day and to declare 2015 as International Year of Soils.
