Natural Christmas preparations at The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor

BAILEYS HARBOR (WLUK) — Celebrating winter and Christmas naturally is taking place in Northern Door County at The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor.

Its humble beginnings started about 15 seasons ago inside a rustic log building.

“The first year, it was that cabin would make a great place for a Christmas party, one of the staff said. Would you put up and decorate a tree for us? And it has kind of escalated since then,” said Julie Knox, Baileys Harbor.

Escalated indeed. Volunteer Knox is working to transform the inside of the space into this year’s theme, a “Winter Wonderland.”

“We’ve got snowshoes, and things about sports, skis, sleds. We have lots of snow flakes. Winter animals, especially winter animals that are white. Snowmen. More snow,” she said.

There’s a special evergreen too.

“Lots of natural things. Our tree is in blue this year, because of silver, blue, white, snow. All of those things that run together,” said Jane Whitney, Baileys Harbor.

The pair is getting this cabin ready ahead of Saturday’s Natural Christmas Event at The Ridges Sanctuary. There will be cookies, hot chocolate, and marshmallows by the campfire.

Those looking for a holiday-themed hike can explore the site on their own, or go with a guide.

The refurbished 850-foot long Range Light Boardwalk was dedicated in September.

“It’s now six feet and wide, and brand new instead of four feet wide and crumbling. So that’s a huge improvement. Also it’s much more accessible than the other one was,” said Whitney.

Whitney says portable lighting along the boardwalks will add to the experience.

Back at the cabin, decorating continues.

“We put a lot of work into it, yes,” said Knox.

Knox says finishing will be a relief.

“For us, it feels like whew, the worst is over. When we get to the party day, then we can just enjoy,” she said.

The Ridges Sanctuary Natural Christmas is Saturday.

It runs from 3-6 p.m.
