Interested in sharing your time and talents, meeting new people, and fulfilling The Ridges’ mission? We offer a wide variety of ways for you to be involved. Volunteers are the backbone of The Ridges and the core of many of our important programs. Over 200 dedicated individuals assist our staff in a number of different areas and no prior experience is needed in any of the categories.

Front Desk Team
Volunteers greet and orient visitors to the Sanctuary, collect trail fees, and assist with those who choose to become a member.
Nature Center Team
Volunteers will assist customers in the store, help stock items, and assist in receiving, sticker/labeling, and inventory.
Volunteers meet weekly throughout the year to work on a variety of projects: trail construction and maintenance, repair and upkeep of buildings and boardwalks, and many other duties necessary to keeping the Sanctuary’s properties and facilities in great shape.
Hike Assistants – “Sweeps”
Volunteers will relay questions from the rear hikers to the leader, making sure that slower hikers are accompanied and letting the leader know if the rear hikers can’t hear what’s being said.
Volunteers lead group tours of the Upper Range Light. Collect trail fees from the north end of our campus and interact with folks interested in the history of the Baileys Harbor Range Lights.
Barberry Pirates – Invasive Species Control
Several species of unwanted, non-native plants threaten the ecological integrity of the Ridges and we need volunteers to help control them. Barberry Pirates can work independently or in small groups.
Surveying & Monitoring
You can help us gather information for long-term studies on butterflies, dragonflies, birds, and plant species as well as water quality changes.
Your love of the outdoors can be shared with dozens of children who attend our youth programs each summer.
Much volunteer help is needed for some of our most exciting events, including the Festival of Nature and our Annual Meeting.
